Cricket World Cup Museum
How do you translate the excitement experienced by the country after India's victory in the 2011 Men's ICC Cricket World Cup into a museum experience?
THE CRICKET WORLD CUP MUSEUM
Sahara Cricket Gaurav Point is a cricket museum dedicated to India’s journey through the world cup tournaments, focusing on the (then recent) 2011 Men’s tournament victory.
Created for a country where cricket and Bollywood could be another religion, this space celebrates the drama and spirit of excitement that the sport offers to Indians.
The museum holds the memorable moments in the history of Indian Cricket World Cup tournaments, and also gives an insight to the lives of legendary cricketers.
INDIAN CRICKET AS A BRAND
References were collected and mood boards were made for the space that resonates with the feeling of energetic and overwhelming pride.
THE LAYOUT
The central display focused on the tournaments wherein India made it to the finals. There were additional amenities like a cafe, a theatre and a mini pitch for cricket practice/ workshops.
The entire set up took 3 months, during which permissions were being obtained, objects for the display were being sourced, and building was supervised.
Artists were approached to sculpt murals and statues, Sahara's in-house design team was responsible for the panels and the specific information that went on them, the Design Company managed the spatial design and construction.
The equipment used in cricket and associated objects were scaled up to be larger than life and adapted to turn into displays.
The three matches where India reached the finals were highlighted with their own displays featuring memorabilia from the matches and key moments of the tournament.
The displays were meant to be engaging and people were encouraged to come as close as possible without touching the objects. The displays were created in a way to encourage the interaction. eg. The helmet allowed the objects to be seen, yet provided a barricade.
The highlight of the gallery was the 2011 World Cup Trophy, which was displayed amongst the signed team jerseys.
Information was layered for the hardcore fans who were interested in everything beyond the pop culture aspect of the tournaments. Statistics, photographs, smaller memorabilia and equipment was showcased along the walls.
A special display was designated for the Men’s winning team 2011 and a gallery showcased the Women’s World Cup tournaments along with the Under - 19 World Cup
A mural of the winning team was created by local artisans that was put up on the outer wall of the building. The theatre screened past and current matches that people could view
