Swishwiffling Storyworlds
How do you make adult visitors in the Roald Dahl Museum look beyond their romanticised memories of his stories?
In the build-up to the centennial Dahl Day celebrations in September 2016, Swishwiffling Storyworlds is a proposal for a series of after hours book club events at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. Dealing with the importance of stories and the influence they have on our lives, Swishwiffling Storyworlds' reintroduces Dahl's stories to adult fans, making them reflect upon their romanticised memories of the story's characters as children, and compare them to their understanding of the same as adults. The event aims to investigate the life of characters in Dahl’s stories, not just in the mind of the writer, but also in the mind of the reader when they are reading it, and when they recollect it later on.
Layering of content for different audiences is an issue faced by a lot of museums today. The point of layering is to provide enough different exhibition strategies that will satisfy the needs/motivations of the visitor that urged them to come to the museum in the first place. This children's museum doesn't currently have much for adults to do, making them wish for just-a-little-more-Dahlness everytime they visit. Using time as a way to layer an experience within the museum, the twisted book readings scheduled for Friday evenings are intended for grown-ups who can visit the museum as a 'lates' experience.
The event for 'Matilda' was detailed as a sample.
TEST RUNS
TEST RUN 01
WIP Show at Central St. Martins. Visitors were amused by the box, but sometimes looked at content in the wrong sequence.
TEST RUN 02
The Southbank Centre. Groups of families were tested on. Adults responded better without children around
